John Smiths

The British Racing School, who trained Kevin Old to win the inaugural running of the John Smiths Peoples Race in 2007 have made their selections for this year's race. The 2008 Peoples race will take place on 5th April (Grand National day) at Aintree Racecourse. The race will have up to ten runners and will be ridden by riders who have had no race riding experience.

The initial selection process took part at the British Racing School on the 17th and 18th January under the supervision of The British racing School jockey coach Richard Perham. Fifteen riders started the assessment on day one, which saw the riders go through a fitness assessment and a riding assessment to see if any of them had the potential to take on further training and go on to the final assessment at The British racing School on the 16th March.

Unfortunately there were a few casualties, however thankfully it was only a few riders' pride that was hurt. Of the initial fifteen who embarked on the assessment, eight have been invited back to The British racing School for the first weekend of training which takes place on the 26th and 27th January.

Richard Perham say's "It was a real thrill and achievement, not only by Kevin Old but by everybody who took part in last years event and I am really excited about training the winner again this year. From the initial assessment at The British racing School I am quietly confident that we have a winner in the group"

The training that will be ongoing for the riders will see them working not only at The British racing School but also riding out in the mornings and weekends for licensed trainers close to their homes and eventually some will graduate from complete beginners to race jockeys on Grand National Day.

One of the lucky riders who has been selected is Clare Twemlow who lives near Newmarket, she say's "what a wonderful opportunity I have been given and I am thoroughly looking forward to having a chance to go through to the final and ride in front of a crowd of more than 50'000 people". John Smiths, Sponsor of the Grand National and the Peoples Race will be giving £100'000 to charity through this charity race.
