Clare Twemlow Winner

The 2008 John Smiths Peoples Race results were dominated by those trained by Richard Perham at The British Racing School. First across the line was the fantastically ridden Zabeel Palace with Newmarket based accountant Clare Twemlow on board. Having sat patiently throughout the race she steered the Barney Curley owned Zabeel Palace across the best ground on the course before coming up the rail for a convincing win.

Clare had slight concerns over the ground before the race but these soon vanished and she was absolutely beaming after the race. "I just can't believe I've done it! - what an amazing feeling. The atmosphere here is fantastic and I loved walking back through the tunnel into the winners enclosure. The race went so quickly but everything went to plan and it was such a buzz. I want to go and do it again!

I couldn't have done this without the help of Neil King, who I have been training with, and The British Racing School who have been fantastic in helping all the southern riders prepare for the day. I'm also really grateful to Mr Curley for providing me with such a lovely horse and I'm so pleased I've managed to go out and win the money for the charity, because that's what is important at the end of the day. £55k will go so far in Zambia and Direct Aid for Africa will put it to excellent use."

Clare hopes to continue riding out for Neil King and has her sights set on the Point to Point circuit for next season.

Lynda Evans came in second on the Peter Bowen Trained Trinity Rose (pictured). Prior to the race Lynda was very calm and optomistic about the day, "I feel very honoured and privileged to be here, I just feel very lucky". Richard Perham was delighted with the way the southern riders handled the day including third placed Jamie Plummer on Royal Wedding.

Richard said "What a fantastic result. I am so proud of all the riders. They have shown a real commitment from the first stages of this unique challenge. It is hard to believe that a couple of months ago most of these had never ridden a racehorse in their lives, let alone ridden in a race. To ride in a race on Grand National day is a huge achievement. Clare rode a really tactical race and showed the patience and nerve that I would usually associate with a professional jockey. Nobody should underestimate the enormity of what these riders have put themselves through to ride in the Peoples Race, it's just a shame that we have to wait another year to do it all over again".
