Richard Perham

The BRS will be running the first of four 7lb claiming seminars of 2008 on Monday 23rd June. The 7lb Claimer seminars were set up in 3 years ago by the BRS with the BHA under the umbrella of "support for young jockeys".

This initiative is there to help young jockeys with their career development. It has long been felt in the industry that racing is being left behind other sports, such as football, golf and tennis. Footballers, golfers and tennis players have access to coaches and academy's, and although we have yet to set up an academy the BRS now has a bank of "jockey Coaches" to deliver advice.

Monday's seminar is for Southern based Conditional jockeys and will be held at the BRS. The seminar starts at 08:45 and includes the following speakers:

Richard Perham (BRS jockey coach) - Seminar introduction
Jon Pitts - Sport science
Simon Milton & Michael Caulfield - Professionalism and Sports Psychology
Clare Hazell - Professional Jockeys Association
Julia Scott Douglas - Diet & Nutrition
Yogita Popat - Security department
Dr Lucy Free - Racecourse doctor
Lisa Delany - Jockeys Employment and Training Scheme
Richard Dunwoody - Principles of jumping

Richard Perham - Jockey Coach

Richard Perham is the British Racing Schools Jockey Coach. His job is to assess, instruct and train all riders attending the many jockey courses held at the school.

Richard grew up in Somerset and was born on a farm. He rode from age 4 and attended Pony Club and hunted. He was a keen sportsman, captaining the school rugby, cricket and hockey teams. At age 14 he decided that racing was what he wanted and rode out for a local trainer during the holidays. He started an apprenticeship with Richard Hannon the day after leaving school and remained with him through out his career (bar 6 months with Ron Hodges at 18). 16 years in the saddle yielded over 230 winners. Having retired from riding in 2001 he has become an accomplished television presenter for Attheraces, designed and manufactured his own Jockey and Polo simulators before taking on the position of Jockey Coach.
