"The pony racing series is a great idea as it gets kids interested in becoming jockeys and the more interest you can generate the better chance you have of producing good jockeys" Ruby Walsh

How did it start?

Pony Racing has actually been around since before the war but in 2004 it's popularity soared when the Charles Owen Pony Racing Series was introduced. Now Pony Racing is said to be the fastest growing equestrian sport in the country!

Pony Racing has been extremely popular in Ireland and France for many years and has been the starting point for successful jockeys both flat and national hunt including

- Jamie Spencer
- Barry Geraghty
- Nina Carberry

In 2007, the Pony Racing Authority (PRA) was introduced to represent and oversee the running of Pony Racing. They ensure Pony Racing's integrity and safety which will be a major step towards increasing the number of young people choosing racing as a career.

With Pony Racing now becoming more accessible and with frequent fixtures across the country we are starting to see some promising young jockeys like Haddon Frost progress from Pony Racing! Will you be the next?

Should I have a go?

Yes!

1. The most important thing is it is FUN!

2. It doesn't have to be expensive, you don't need to have the fastest pony and "all the gear". For a list of the essentials see the rules on the PRA website.

3. You can gain valuable experience of skills, fitness and professionalism needed to be a jockey or to work in racing.

What next?

1. Have a look at our Pony Racing Calendar at events in your area

2. A good start is to come on a course at The British Racing School or call us to see if we can do one in your area! View our Training or contact Sarah Hayde on 01638 675906.

Did you know Frankie Dettori had a go at Pony Racing?

"When I was eleven years old living in Italy there was a pony race on one of the family racedays at Milan racecourse. I had a pony called Sylvia and we enetered the race. I came last but it was a brilliant experience and the closest you can get to the real thing when you are that age. After that I knew I didn't want to do anything else!"
