What do the Qualifications entail?

Learners can choose the NVQ2 or 3 depending on what they require from the qualification, their current work practices and their level of experience.

Many learners will want to simply gain the NVQ Level 2 to gain a qualification in something they are good at, based on the tasks being performed on a daily basis. Depending on your experience there will be very little written evidence for this qualification.

An Assessor from the British Racing School will visit your yard to carry out assessments and generate work in simple bitesize chunks towards your qualification. Support and additional training will also be available from the British Racing School. The frequency and time of visits will be tailor-made to your individual training requirements and preferred method of working.

The NVQ Level 3 in Racehorse Care and Management goes into greater detail and some of the units will be based on a written portfolio. Suffolk-based learners may need to attend the British Racing School for portfolio-building sessions, lectures on Horse Health or for training and assessment on Clipping, Plaiting, Long-reining etc.

Why Study for a qualification?

Part of the remit of Train To Gain is to get Adults assessed and qualified to reward them for the vocational and practical skills they perform on a day-today basis. As with every qualification there will be some element of learning new skills and learning more about topics that interest you.

An NVQ2 is equivalent to 5 GCSEs Grade A-C and an NVQ3 is equivalent to 2 A Levels. They are accepted nationally as meaningful equivalents to academic qualifications.

The NVQ3 is linked to the Grade A Racing Wage.

Many Adverts for Racing Staff mention the NVQ3 level when outlining the requirements and responsibilities of the job on offer.

An NVQ3 is a mandatory requirement for all prospective permit holders and trainers. Many modern trainers have completed their NVQ3 through the British Racing School and they are aware of the research, knowledge and work that goes into a portfolio and are looking for staff with this qualification.

Many Assistant Trainers and Head lads / lasses have failed to progress in their career through the lack of an NVQ3 when an opportunity has arisen to take on a licence. As your career progresses it will be harder to devote time to the qualification.
Qualifications can help you to gain work permits for working abroad or may help if you would like to move into other Equine areas such as Farriery.

Qualifications are a good way of proving that older employees are receptive to training, assessment and new ideas.
