Richard Killoran proves he is Hands and Heels Specialist
Richard Killoran, conditional jockey based with trainer Brendan Powell in Winchester, has won the 2006/07 Racing Post Hands and Heels Jumps Series. Richard has proved he is a Hands and Heels specialist, having also won the Teletext sponsored Hands and Heels Apprentice Series in 2004.
The jockey is now set to become a familiar figure as the Racing Post will sponsor him for the next 12 months, providing branded riding equipment and a cash prize - but more importantly they will also feature monthly updates on Richard's career. To enable Richard to maximise the benefit from this publicity he will attend a media training day with the Jockeys Employment and Training Scheme (JETS).
Steve Smith-Eccles, Jockey Coach at The British Racing School commented: "This series is an excellent initiative for teaching young riders race riding skills and the discipline to not automatically resort to the whip. Richard has illustrated he is developing these vital skills and he is a young jockey that I'm sure we will hear a lot more about in the future".
Chris Smith, Editor of the Racing Post said: "The fact that Richard has now won both the Flat and Jumps Series shows what a huge talent he is and what a great future he has. His victory illustrates perfectly the value of the Hands and Heels Series. I'm particularly looking forward to following his career by reading his monthly column in the Racing Post".
Brendan Powell, who Richard is based with said: "This is great for Richard, he's worked very hard and is a smashing lad. Just a year ago, whilst he'd had plenty of experience on the flat, he'd never jumped an obstacle. He's now getting regular rides and doing everything right. This series has undoubtedly helped him a great deal, not only with developing his race riding, but also in providing him with opportunities to ride for lots of different trainers including a winner for Nicky Henderson".
John Blake, Chief Executive of the Jockeys Association of Great Britain said: "Richard's achievement in winning the jumps series, having previously won the flat series, is unique and many congratulations to him. This has been another excellent year for the Racing Post Hands and Heels Jumps Series, helped specifically by the sponsors who have given the series and riders excellent coverage, and indeed Jockey Coaches Steve Smith-Eccles and Jason Callaghan whose briefing work in this series I have seen on several occasions".
