Hanagan in Action

British Racing School graduate Paul Hanagan is currently having a season to be remembered, and as we head towards mid summer's day he currently leads the Flat jockey's leader board with a strike rate of 18%.

With 78 winners from 440 rides he is pursued by Joe Fanning on 67 winners and current champion jockey Ryan Moore on 63.

It was back in 1997 that Paul entered the racing industry by coming to the BRS to complete his NVQ2 on course 99 (a course which also turned out fellow professional Amir Quinn). It was Paul's father that first got him interested in racing and he started work for small local trainer Terry Cauldwell. He found out about the BRS through his school and would now attribute his time here as "the best days of my life; I made so many good friends that are still good friends now". Less than a year after completing his course he was back to take out his apprentice licence under the guidance of Mr Richard Fahey. This is a relationship that is still going strong when just yesterday the pair joined forces and recorded an across the card double at Hamilton and Ripon. But maybe to supersede this on the opening day of Royal Ascot 2010 the pair were victorious in the Windsor Castle Stakes with Marine Commando. However Paul's biggest winner to date came back in 2004 when he partnered Mirjan for trainer Len Lungo in the John Smith's Northumberland Plate. Although, if you ask Paul about his most memorable winner he would say "when I won the Lancashire Oaks aboard Anna Pavlova in 2008".

With his current best season being just last year when Paul rode 119 winners and it looks like he's well on the way to equalling that this year but as he's says "there's along way to go and Ryan Moore is definitely the man to beat"; everybody at the BRS has fingers crossed that he can go even better.
