Lewis Gordon makes successful start to career in the saddle

We’ve been delighted to see British Racing School graduate Lewis Gordon ride his first two winners under rules this National Hunt season.

Lewis left BRS in 2010 and enjoyed a stint with leading jumps trainer Nicky Henderson in Lambourn before joining Jennifer and Peter Mason’s team in Gloucestershire. He has recently been signed up as conditional jockey for Evan Williams in Wales, for whom he has ridden both his winners so far.

Jennifer Mason has fond recollections of the time Lewis spent at her yard, which combines her National Hunt horses with her husband’s point-to-pointers. She says: “Lewis became like a part of our family when he was with us and living with us, and will always remain so. He is a very special person and we are very proud of where he is now. We gave him a great start but only someone like Lewis, with the commitment, can go on and make it as a jockey.”

That dedication has seen Lewis win two of his six starts under rules, landing a handicap chase by 14 lengths at Chepstow in November aboard Islandmagee, followed by being given the responsibility of partnering four-year-old Nansaroy for his bumper debut at Ffos Las in December. The pair came home in front by half a length from Nansaroy’s stable-mate The Gipper.

Our thanks go to Jennifer and Peter Mason for providing the accompanying photo of Lewis Gordon, left, schooling one of their horses.
