Marquand comes out on top in Apprentice Championship

After a nail biting final week of the Stobart Champion Apprentice title race it was BRS Graduate Tom Marquand that landed the spoils by a margin of two.

Fellow BRS Graduate Jack Garritty kept the fight alive with a double on Friday but after drawing a blank in two rides at Ascot on Saturday, the pacesetter Marquand added a final winner at Catterick to take his tally to 54 wins for the 2015 season.

The 17-year-old, who collected the £5,000 first prize, added his name to a roll of honour that includes other BRS Graduate such as Seb Sanders, Royston Ffrench, William Buick, Paul Hanagan and Oisin Murphy, plus many more.

“It’s unbelievable to be in this position,” Marquand told the Racing Post “Twelve months ago I hadn’t even ridden in a race and it was only in December I rode my first winner. I’d like to thank my boss Richard Hannon, agent Sashi Righton and all the trainers and owners who’ve supported me.”

Both Jack and Tom should be hugely proud of what they gave achieved this year and undoubtedly they will have successful careers ahead of them.
