One small step is a giant leap for Marquand

We’d like to congratulate our Graduate Tom Marquand who will be over the moon after riding out his Apprentice Claim yesterday having ridden his 95th winner.

Tom has taken just 20 months to turn professional after winning aboard Scarlett Dragon at Newbury on 30th June.

The 18 year old started his race riding career pony racing having attended the British Racing School back in 2011 to complete his training days and the residential camp. After successfully completing his GCSE’s he was back with us again for the Level 2 Diploma Apprenticeship before heading to Richard Hannon Jnr and this dream start to his race riding career began.

Since November 2014, when Tom came to The BRS to be assessed and granted his Apprentice Jockey Licence, he has achieved:

  • 2015 Racing Excellence Apprentice All Weather Hands and Heels Series Champion
  • 2015 Stobart Champion Apprentice
  • 2015 nomination for BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year

Twitter was full of congratulations from people within the racing industry recognising the achievement including tweets from Hayley Turner, Richard Hannon, Johnno Spence and Dale Gibson, and Marquand also took the time to say “Amazing to ride out my claim out at Newbury for Mr Ponsonby on Scarlet Dragon, massive thank you to everyone who has got me this far!”

So, congratulations Tom, onward and upwards. We are sure you’ll have a long and successful career in the saddle.
